fibroids affect sex life

Symptoms of uterine fibroids are painful and present many challenges in a woman’s life. Besides severe abdominal pain and heavy and prolonged menstrual periods, fibroids also affect a couple’s sex life. Symptoms such as bleeding between periods, frequent urination and pelvic pressure can get in the way of sexual intercourse. Intercourse may become painful and uncomfortable depending on the location and size of the fibroid tumor as well. Another effect that fibroids may have, related to these symptoms, is the loss of libido. The desire to have sex can be lost due to these symptoms and that can affect a couple’s relationship.

There are different surgical and non-surgical alternatives available for fibroid treatment. Most women are told hysterectomy is their only option. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) 200,000 hysterectomies are performed every year due to fibroids. At USA Fibroid Centers we offer a minimally invasive and non-surgical fibroid treatment during which the fibroids are reduced in size and the symptoms gradually disappear. This treatment is called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) and is performed as an outpatient procedure with shorter recovery than surgery.

Research confirmed UFE improves a woman’s sex life. A French study presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s Annual Scientific Meeting, also found the vast majority of women treated with UFE sustained improvement for more than a year.

Researchers from 25 centers throughout France conducted a prospective study involving 246 women who underwent UFE to treat fibroids. Study participants completed the Uterine Fibroid Symptom and Health-related Quality of Life Questionnaire to report their quality of life before and one year post treatment. The women were also asked to complete the female Sexual Function Index, a brief questionnaire developed to assess sexual function in clinical trials. Nearly 78.8% women who completed the assessment at the one –year mark demonstrated improvement in sexual function, including pain, desire, arousal and satisfaction.
