Fibroid Awareness 2022 News 12

Dr. Yan Katsnelson, co-founder and CEO of USA Clinics Group, appeared on News 12 Long Island to discuss uterine fibroids and how to treat them.

Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They are very common, affecting up to 80% of women at some point in their lives. Fibroids can cause various symptoms, including heavy bleeding, pain, and infertility.

Until recently, the only treatment for fibroids was surgery. However, a minimally invasive procedure called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is now a safe and effective alternative.

During UFE, a small catheter is inserted into an artery in the leg or arm and guided to the arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. Tiny particles are then injected into the arteries, blocking the blood supply to the fibroids. This causes the fibroids to shrink and eventually die.

UFE takes about 40 minutes and can be performed on an outpatient basis. Patients typically go home the same day and can resume normal activities within a few days.

Dr. Katsnelson emphasized that UFE is a safe and effective treatment for fibroids. He said that it is a good option for women who want to avoid surgery.
