Recently, Dr. Yan Katsnelson, founder of USA Fibroid Centers, shared his expertise on uterine fibroids in an article by The Sacramento Bee, addressing a common question: can fibroids cause weight gain?
Dr. Katsnelson explained that uterine fibroids can indeed cause weight gain due to their size and the pressure they exert on other organs. “Fibroids are tumors inside the uterus,” he noted, adding that women can have anywhere from one to 30 or 40 fibroids, ranging from the size of grapes to as large as a watermelon. The compression from these tumors can lead to bloating and abdominal pressure, contributing to weight gain.
Besides weight gain, Dr. Katsnelson pointed out other common symptoms of uterine fibroids, including heavier and longer periods, and urinary urgency. Misconceptions about fibroid treatment were also addressed, particularly the belief that hysterectomy is the only solution. Dr. Katsnelson emphasized that non-surgical treatments like uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) are effective alternatives.
