Woman holding stomach in pain, suffering from heavy and painful periods.

Many women from time to time experience heavy bleeding during menstrual period. But if you have heavy menstrual bleeding that lasts for more than a week, bleeding between menstrual periods you may be suffering from uterine fibroids. Fibroids are the most common tumors of the female reproductive tract. Although benign they can present many painful symptoms such as prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain and cramps, frequent urination, pelvic pain and pressure and sometimes pain during sexual intercourse. Women of reproductive age are the highest risk of developing uterine fibroids. The fibroid tumor is connected to your uterine lining. The pressure of the fibroid against the uterine wall can cause the endometrial tissue to bleed more than it normally would. This may cause a heavy or prolonged periods and bleeding between periods. Typically, when you have your period, the uterine muscles will contract causing the blood to clot enough to stop menstrual bleeding, when fibroids are present on your uterine lining, they can prevent the uterus from fully contracting, causing a continuation in bleeding. The fibroids can also stimulate the blood vessels of the uterus, causing more blood in the uterine cavity, leading to heavy periods. Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding may lead to anemia (iron deficiency) causing fatigue and tiredness. At USA Fibroid Centers we offer minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment for fibroids performed as an outpatient procedure- Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). During a UFE procedure the fibroid tumor is reduced in size and most women experience improvement in their fibroid symptoms including lighter and shorter menstrual bleeding.
